Modern Foreign Languages (French and Spanish)
Curriculum intent
At Broadoak, we want our MFL students to play an active role in the world they live in and be able to manipulate the language they are learning.
By providing students with an immersive love of language that evokes passion, cultural awareness, and communication skills to access the wider world. We will create learners that are resilient, open-minded language detectives who are empowered to communicate in reading, listening, writing, translation and speaking with self-agency.
During their time at Broadoak, students will study either Spanish and French and learn about the key grammar necessary to communicate in the language, alongside the literature, history, cultural celebrations, and cinema from countries which speak these languages. The MFL department have a wide range of resources to support students learning including dictionaries, textbooks, and access to online websites.
KS3 curriculum
Students will be assessed throughout the year for knowledge, understanding and skills and will complete two formal assessments in Term 2 and Term 6.
KS4 curriculum
Students will be assessed throughout the KS4 for knowledge, understanding and skills and will complete three formal assessments in Term 6 of Year 10 and Term 2 and Term 4 of Year 11.
Students will follow the 9-1 AQA linear specification, the course continues developing the five skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading, Translation and Writing. Our KS4 Scheme of Learning is written in line with the AQA GCSE French or Spanish courses

By learning languages, you develop a vast range of skills such as improved communication skills, critical thinking skills, problem solving, and improved memory to name just a few. These are all invaluable skills that can lead you into a wide range of careers/ professions. Languages are also classified as a facilitating subject preferred by universities to get on to a range of degree courses.
