Design & Technology
We aim through Design and Technology to offer a unique learning experience, to stimulate curiosity about everyday products and develop skills and knowledge essential for an increasingly technologically advancing world. Our integrated Key Stage 3 Design and Technology programme draws together Food Technology, Textiles Technology, Resistant Materials and Systems and Control.
The department is a thriving, creative and ambitious environment where students are supported and encouraged to achieve their full potential. We believe in a hands-on approach and that students should learn through doing. Students will learn an important array of life skills as well as have fun in the classroom.
Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 study all aspects of the design process, including how professional designers and manufacturers work together to develop and market new products. The course includes aspects of electronic product design, fashion design, food production, graphic design, nutrition, and computer aided design and manufacture. It aims to develop skills of creativity, teamwork, independent problem solving and communication as well as practical skills.
Within the department we aim to encourage and support the development of student’s designs and making skills, recognising the value of each individual’s ideas, working together safely to develop practical skills and celebrating the achievements of each student.
Design and Technology – Options
At KS4 Students are currently following one of the following:
- GCSE AQA in Design and Technology
- GCSE WJEC Food Preparation and Nutrition
- GCSE EDUQAS Level 1/2 Hospitality and Catering
The AQA GCSE option for Design and Technology. The new qualification is modern and relevant, so students can learn about new and emerging technologies, materials and processes, as well as established practice. The new GCSE places greater emphasis on understanding and applying iterative design processes. Students in yr 11 currently studying food are following the EDUQAS GCSE in Food Preparation and Nutrition. Our yr 10 students will be following The WJEC Level 1/2 Hospitality and Catering which is a more practical course for those learners more interested in the Food industry.
GCSE AQA in Design and Technology
Written Paper – 50% of GCSE
- 2 hours
- 100 marks
- Core technical principles
- Specialist technical principles
- Designing and making principles
Non Exam Assessment – 50% of GCSE
Students will produce a prototype and a portfolio of evidence.
- Approximately 35 hrs. Portfolio of evidence / manufactured outcome
- 100 marks
GCSE WJEC Food Preparation and Nutrition
- 15% (NEA 1) of final mark is a science investigation which will assess the learners knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to scientific principles underlying the preparation and cooking of food
- 35% (NEA 2) of final mark is to prepare and cook a menu which assesses the learner’s knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to the planning, preparation, cooking and presentation of food.
- 50% Written examination of1 hour 45 minutes which will assess the content of the course covered over the 2 years
GCSE EDUQAS Level 1/2 Hospitality and Catering
- Unit 1- Hospitality and Catering Industry- Online assessment (90 minute exam)
The focus – students apply their learning by considering all aspects of the vocational sector.
- Unit 2 Hospitality and Catering in Action – Controlled assessment
The focus – students apply their learning to safely prepare, cook and present nutritional dishes.
The department is equipped with a dedicated suite of rooms to facilitate all technology disciplines including an ICT suite with laser cutters, a milling machine, Camm 1 machine and computerised textile embroidery machine.
All of the areas are designed to give a flexible working environment for students in the designing situation, each area being furnished to allow work of a graphic/ modelling nature. We also have excellent software facilities including: – Pro Desktop, CorelDraw graphics suite, 2D Design, Adobe Master CS3 collection.

The faculty provides regular opportunities for students to take part in enrichment activities. Ready steady cook, the ‘Broadoak bake-off’ and bring your parent to cook have all proved very popular. Workshops to develop skills are offered for all disciplines and prove beneficial for KS4 students. We achieved great success in the STEM engineers wind turbine event at Bristol and won convincingly on all accounts.
The excellent work of the students is celebrated with displays throughout the school and an annual showcase in conjunction with Art.
