The Modern Foreign Languages faculty is a successful department where students learn either Spanish or French. Our enthusiastic team of teachers pride themselves in their good relationships with their students and share their passion for language learning in every lesson. Students studying Spanish and French learn about the key grammar necessary to communicate in the language, but also about literature, history and cinema from countries which speak these languages.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9)
In Year 7, students cover topics which include introducing and describing yourself and others, family, pets, using the present tense, what we do in our free time and navigating around the town we live in.
In Year 8, students learn how to talk about social media and technology, our homes, clothes and fashion, and the future and past tenses.
In Year 9, students learn to describe their holidays, school and career plans, food and healthy living (including Spanish or French traditional dishes) and new media. We also explore important historical and cultural events such as the French Revolution and the Mexican Day of the Dead.
Key Stage 4
Using the 9-1 AQA linear specification, the course continues developing the five skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading, Translation and Writing. Our KS4 Scheme of Learning is written in line with the AQA GCSE French or Spanish courses published by OUP. A key feature is Kerboodle, an online platform which students can access from home. These resources recap and extend the knowledge and understanding gained in Key Stage Three and help to prepare students for the GCSE examinations in the summer of Year 11.
Homework is set regularly via Show My Homework and provides the opportunity to reinforce and extend the learning that has taken place in the lessons. This could be in the form of learning homework, reading and writing activities or an online task.
During their time at Broadoak students may have the opportunity to travel to France or Spain. Previously, groups of enthusiastic Year 7 and 8 students have undertaken action packed visits to Lille and Paris. For the successful Paris trip, we visit a patisserie, Notre Dame, a traditional French Market, a chocolate museum, Sacré Cœur, the Pont des Arts and the Eiffel Tower. Students also see some of Paris’ other famous landmarks during a boat trip on a ‘Bateau Mouche’. Students always thoroughly enjoy it. The MFL faculty is hoping to organise its first Spanish visit in 2019-2020.
