Our lovely dining area is very popular with students and, provided by our new external caterers, Caterlink, we focus on providing healthy food for all students, including those eligible for free school meals. There is always plenty of choice, with two hot food counters, a pasta bar and a deli counter serving a range of sandwiches, wraps, baguettes and salads available to all students. We have regular theme days showcasing food from a range of international cuisines.
Our Breakfast Club takes place in the canteen from 8.00am to 8.30am every morning and is open to all students. A range of breakfast items are available to kick-start the day!
There are lots of ways to eat healthier. The government have launched a campaign called “Change for Life”. Their website has lots of information on how to keep a healthy lifestyle, including loads of delicious meal ideas. There is lots of further information available on the NHS Change 4 Life website
Healthy packed lunches
We welcome students with packed lunches into the dining area too, though they can also choose to eat outside in the quad areas or at the front of the school. Please note that eating inside the building other than in the dining areas is not allowed. Follow this link for information and ideas on how to keep your packed lunch interesting while still being healthy!
In keeping with the theme of developing healthy young people, we ask that no students bring fizzy drinks or energy drinks into school. The effects of such drinks on young people can be immense in terms of their concentration, behaviour, dental health and physical health.
We appreciate your support in our aims for a healthy school!
Free School Meals
Is my child entitled to free school meals?
Any child attending a North Somerset school whose parents or carers receive one or more of these benefits is entitled to receive free meals at school:
- child tax credit, provided your annual income as assessed by HM Revenue and Customs does not exceed £16,190. If you receive working tax credit you will not be entitled unless you’re in receipt of a four-week
- guarantee element of state pension credit
- income support
- income-based job seekers allowance
- income-related employment support allowance
- support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
How do I apply for free school meals?
North Somerset Local Authority have replaced the old free school meal paper application forms with a new online checker.
Parents are able to apply online at home, and in school, and get an instant result. The system will generate a letter that parents can print off and give to schools to show eligibility. Where parents do not have printers, they can forward on the email to [email protected] , or showing it to school staff on their smart phone. You can apply online to get an instant result. If you are eligible, your entitlement will begin on the day you apply and will end on the last day of each term. You need to apply 3 times per year and if you have more than one child, you will need to apply for each child separately. North Somerset Council are unable to backdate claims, so please ensure you apply before the beginning of Terms 1,3 and 5.
If parents give schools their permission, schools can check eligibility on their behalf. In order to do this, the school would require the parent’s National Insurance number and date of birth.
Schools will be sent an email at the beginning of each term detailing who has applied. Anyone who applies mid-term will be able to show schools their eligibility letter. Eligibility starts from the date on the letter, and stops at the end of that term.
