Review of the Detention System

Dear Parents/Carers,

I am writing in regard to our current detention system. The system currently requires students to attend a 50-minute detention at the end of the school day where a restorative conversation is held with the teacher that gave the student a referral. However, we would like to make some slight changes following some staff and student voice.

In order to further develop this system for our young people, we will now expect students to attend the workspace after period 6 as usual if they are referred. They will then have the opportunity to hold a restorative conversation with their referring teacher. While they are waiting for this to happen/if they have had the conversation at the start of detention, they will then create a minimum of 2 mind map revision materials from the termly knowledge organisers provided for homework. Further instruction and support for this will be provided by the teacher leading detention. If these revision materials are substantial and well presented, they will have the opportunity to leave the space at 3:25pm. If the student has multiple referrals during the day from various teachers however, they will still be expected to stay until 3:50pm.

We wanted to ensure that the time for detention is well-used by our young people and staff to aid in our students’ education and professional relationships. We hope that this will further support our students to use their time carefully, make better choices, and show courage.

All parents are notified of detentions via the Classcharts app. Please email [email protected] if you have any further enquiries.
