Music
Curriculum intent
The music curriculum at Broadoak Academy explores musical cultures, genres and traditions through a variety of listening and practical music-making activities. Our curriculum is built around the main elements of music and is designed to broaden and deepen both subject knowledge and technical skills, adapting to the continuously evolving culture of music whilst maintaining the fundamentals in music history and theory. Students benefit from individual, paired and group work, empowering them to be independent, creative and enthusiastic musicians, composers and listeners who foster a lifelong appreciation and love of music.
KS3 curriculum
Students will be assessed throughout the year for knowledge, understanding and skills and will complete two formal assessments in Term 2 and Term 6.
KS4 curriculum
Students will be assessed throughout the KS4 for knowledge, understanding and skills and will complete three formal assessments in Term 6 of Year 10 and Term 2 and Term 4 of Year 11.
We study the AQA GCSE specification.
Pathways beyond school – where could this subject take you?
Students develop an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of musicians involved in composing and performing music. Exploration musicians studied and different musical styles enable students to successfully produce and review performances.
Student’s rehearsal and performance assessment criteria put emphasis on the ability to work individually and as part of a group and identify strengths and areas of improvement.
The ability to create, compose and perform is fundamental in the entertainment/communications industries as well as more widely in employment through the ability to present and communicate information to others.
Extra-curricular opportunities
The music department celebrates the talent and dedication of students in all years through performances throughout the year in varying settings, the highlights being the Christmas Carol Concert and the Performing Arts Showcase.
Whole school production
Every Year the Performing Arts faculty come together to produce a whole school production combining Music, Drama and Dance. It is open to students in all year groups to take part both on and off the stage. The faculty have produced a number of big hit shows including ‘Fame’, ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Camp Rock’, ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, ‘The Wiz’ and ‘Back To The 80s’ and most recently ‘Mary Poppins’.
